Don Bernard began his pre-law studies at the University of Michigan before transferring to the University of Texas, where he completed his Bachelor of Arts in Pre-Law in 1954. He was also commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy that year. Mr. Bernard continued his studies at the University of Texas, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1958. He passed the Texas State Bar Exam in the same year.

From 1958 to 1959, Donald Bernard served as Briefing Attorney for the Supreme Court of Texas in Austin before being promoted to Assistant Attorney General of the State of Texas. In 1960, Mr. Bernard began working at the firm of Bernard & Bernard. He received his Master of Laws in 1964 from the University of Texas. Later that year, he wrote the book Origin of the Special Verdict As Now Practiced in Texas. Don Bernard served on the Board of Directors for the National Kidney Foundation, Inc., in Houston from 1960 to 1963. He became a member of the faculty of the Southwestern School of Real Estate in 1968.

From 1970 to 1980, Mr. Bernard with the Commemorative Air Force as an Air Show Pilot, holding certification to fly 41 different aircraft, including jets.
In 1975, Commander Don Bernard retired from the Submarine Service of the United States Navy. From 1980 to 1994, he operated a private law practice. From 1995 to 1996, he was a Professor in the field of international law at the University of St. Thomas in Houston, as well as a guest lecturer at the College of Business of Montana State University.

An international businessman, Don Bernard is co-owner of Golden Stag Safaris in La Pampa, Argentina, and Chairman and Vice President of Laguna Verde in southern Patagonia, a fishing lodge and trout farm that soon will export smoked trout to Europe and the United States. His management has helped these entities become multimillion dollar businesses that attract sportsmen from around the globe. Donald R. Bernard continues to serve the public as a Certified Mountain Search Pilot in Montana.
